A Night of Laughs with comedian, Ronny Chieng from The Daily Show

The Rockwell

Saturday night at The Rockwell in Somerville, Ronny Chieng from The Daily Show made me laugh so hard that tears were rolling down my face and my voice got hoarse from laughing so much.

This was exactly what I needed after the week we had and I’m so glad that he touched on the insanity. Yes, yes…yassss!

I didn’t care too much for the comics that preceded him tho especially when one of them, who was actually the host, recycled the whole Chinese-people-eating-cats/dogs “joke.” Really? You’re gonna throw that one out knowing that Ronny is headlining the event? And, knowing that it’s been done so much that unless you bring something new to the table, you better sit down and stay seated. But, the Mister and I didn’t come to the show for him. Thank gawd.

Ronny touched on so many things that the Mister and I could relate to: going through customs at the airport, the subway, and being Chinese among many other things.

At the end of the show, Ronny was super nice about meeting the audience and we jumped at the chance. I told him, “I love you,” as the Mister and I left with a couple USBs of his previous specials.

I asked the Mister if he was aight with me telling that to Ronny to which he responded that he loved Ronny too.

BBQ in Texas Is No Joke

Cooper's Pit BBQ in Austin, Texas | by Lillian Lee

After this trip, I can never have BBQ back home in Boston. The melt-in-your-mouth brisket is out of this world and I’m now upset at all the times I was served chewy, tough brisket and thought it was good.

Pecan Lodge

This was the bbq spot that made it onto my must-visit list and we were also told by anyone we met that we had to go there for BBQ. Tip: Try to get there when it opens so that you can avoid the crazy lines. BBQ for brunch isn’t a bad idea.

The Pecan Lodge menu. I wish we could’ve tried everything.

We ordered the 3 meat sampler: brisket (!!!), ribs and housemade sausage w a side of collard greens.

So when Pecan Lodge first started they were known for their fried chicken. There’s a reason why. Most amazing friend chicken I’ve ever eaten – so light, crispy and juicy.

Is there such a thing as bad bbq in Texas? Austin does it well too!

Korean BBQ and fried chicken goodness in Texas

Gang Jung Chicken in Dallas, Texas | by Lillian Lee

When we got to Texas, we had no idea there was such a large Korean population there. It was a dream come true. Korean BBQ and  fried chicken readily available! Look, it’s slim pickings in Boston.

Gen Korean BBQ

This is the new Dallas location for this California-based Korean BBQ restaurant. It was simply amazing and all-you-can-eat. The meats kept coming to the point where we had to say no more, no more.

We were giddy with excitement to see the small side dishes come out…AND they had salad too!

SO much variety of meats available – bulgogi, steak, pork belly and more. We were like kids in a candy store.

The interior definitely felt like a club.

Loved this restaurant. It felt some home-y inside…and they offered draught beer in frosted mugs! Hello.

I’ve never had Korean fried chicken topped with the rice cakes. I loved that added touch. This thing was so saucy and so spicy. Yum!

Rice Chicken

We had just finished catching a Bare Naked Ladies concert (which was spectacular by the way) and needed some food, but it was late. We found Rice Chicken and ordered some for take-out to eat in our hotel room.

Danny King Donuts & Other Bakery Goodies in Texas

So glad we popped in for some donuts and coffee at Danny King Donuts on our drive to Austin for the day because we met the nicest lady.

The Mister couldn’t resist getting a hot dog bun as well.

85C Bakery Cafe

The desserts and bakery items all looked SO beautiful! We had to pick up some treats. Also, the Gen BBQ restaurant is nearby along with a bunch of other restaurants AND…a Daiso!

It was super busy. One section was the bakery and the other was for coffee and boba.

We wanted more, but settled on a hot dog bun, Portugese egg tart and a blueberry pie.

Argentina Bakery

One of our first stops after landing in Dallas and getting the rental car was…empanadas and coffee. It was random but it was pretty close and on the way to our hotel.

So glad we made this pit stop because they were delicious – the flaky, buttery crust was to die for.

Tacos, tacos & more tacos in Texas!

El Ranchero Meat Market | by Lillian Lee

The Mister and I absolutely love tacos. We could probably eat them 24/7 if possible. So we were super excited to find some stellar spots in Texas ‘cuz it’s damn near impossible to find much in Boston…or if they’re available, they cost like $4 a taco…which is highway robbery.

El Ranchero Meat Market

After a quick bite of empanadas and some coffee right when we pretty much landed, the Mister found this taco treasure house located in a butcher shop / grocery store. We totally stuck out like a sore thumb, but…tacos!

After figuring out that we had to order at the cash register first in order to get a ticket to hand over to the food pick-up area, we were good.

My favorite is always – always – the lengua, or tongue. But, we ordered an assortment.

Bachman Tacos and Grill

With a picture on the side of the building along with Trompo in big, bold type, I was expecting amazing – fantastic – al pastor style tacos, the kind that’s sliced from the spit with pineapple.

The barbacoa was delicious. We enjoyed it more than the trompo because it just melted – oiy. so good!

We ordered pork skin thinking it would be crispy, but it was actually stewed. I couldn’t handle the texture so the Mister had to finish it.

Elotes Stand at Chevron Gas Station

After tacos, we tried some elote at the elote stand which was located right outside of Bachman Tacos and Grill. Watching it get made was a little horrifying – the amount of mayo was out of this world – but, as long as I didn’t think about it was super delicious.

The elote lady filled this cup with fresh cut corn from the cob (!) and then doused some mayo, cheese, and hot sauce into it.

Burgers, milkshakes, and…tator tots! at Maple & Motor in Dallas, Texas

Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX: Go Big in Texas | by Lillian Lee

We had brunch at a neighborhood joint called Maple & Motor. We had no idea what was in store for us…

Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX: Go Big in Texas | by Lillian Lee

Let’s start off with a house-made ice cream milkshake. The straw was just for decoration.

Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX: Go Big in Texas | by Lillian Lee

I ordered the cheeseburger, which weighed a ton. It was a beast. Could definitely taste that Dallas beef tho.

Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX: Go Big in Texas | by Lillian Lee

The Mister ordered the brisket sandwich. Brisket brisket brisket…is so amazing in TX. I’m offended by all the dry, chewy brisket i’ve been served in Boston all these years. If it doesn’t melt, then it needs to be thrown onto the ground.

Maple & Motor in Dallas, TX: Go Big in Texas | by Lillian Lee

It was so much food that we tragically could not finish the tater tots! I know! It pained me to leave it.

We really enjoyed this place – friendly people and delicious food. What more can you ask for?

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza, Dallas, Texas

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza in Dallas Texas | by Lillian Lee

Coming from John F. Kennedy‘s place of birth, you’d think that I would know all that there is to know about our 35th president. Sadly, that was not the case until I visited the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza in Dallas Texas.

I learned a lot about his life in his death. It was more profound given that we were right in the midst of the presidential elections between Clinton or Trump.

(Note: The Mister and I made sure to vote early before we left.)

Loved this coffee cup. I almost purchased the replica from the gift shop.

I’ll definitely be making a visit to the JFK Presidential Library & Museum in Boston. How could I not after this?

I wish I could’ve tried them all. Also, the plates that they were served on and the whole ambiance of the shop reminded me of being in London for some afternoon tea.
